[Session Youth] Ableton World Builder

5 class sessions

Virtual MFML Show & Tell :  Saturday, August 15th

**Open to all youth ages 11-18

We will explore Ableton Live 10 as an instrument and world builder. Learn the basic skills of production through sonic experiments, influenced by the pioneers of electronic music.This course is open to all skill levels.

For Beginners, you will gain the skills necessary ,through a hands on deep dive of Ableton Live 10, to produce your own electronic music compositions. You will explore applications of Ableton from producing installation-ready soundscapes to beat-making.

For Intermediate / Pro Users, you will explore how we can collaborate over the web in real time through Ableton. You will explore strategies of integrating Ableton into your live performance set-up – from controlling your sonic to lighting environments. You will learn the art of routing : from out-board equipment, tape machines etc, to inboard units, multi-channel setups for spatialized audio. Lastly, you will explore the uses of Ableton’s M4L instruments, specifically connection kit, in order to make real-time changes to your compositions based on everything from the current weather data to light conditions in your room.

Final Product: An original, collaboratively-created sonic production.

System requirements & Course Materials:

  • For Windows: Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 , 64-bit Intel® (Intel® Core™ i5 processor or faster recommended) or AMD multi-core processor, 4 GB RAM (8 GB or more recommended)
  • Recommend Devices: 1 device for Zoom and Voice Memos (smartphone, computer, or tablet)

Meet your Artist Instructors:

Sterling Steffen is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has arranged music for and performed with many of Austin’s premiere bands including: Mother Falcon, Wild Child, Los Coast, Dr. Joe, Sir Woman, and the Watters. He has been a member of the MFML team for 8 years and has run the recording and electronic music workshop at MFML for 3 years.

Nick Gregg is a multi-disciplinary artist that focuses around systems of learning – from architectural design to composition to virtual reality development; from lighting installations that translate sound to color to liquid-based projects that physicalize the fragility of our digital privacy in relation to the economy of third-party trackers. He founded Mother Falcon and is the Creative Director of MFML. He holds a B.ARCH from UT Austin and a M.P.S from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program.

With so much to learn and share, we’re ensuring participants are able to stay in the moment and centered on content. Each Artist Instructor is supported by an additional instructor in the zoom room to monitor needs, helping to field questions and assist with technical issues. Also, we are offering a virtual Chill Room – a spot where you can play a game, relax from class or talk anything out with Mr. Michael!

The unique content of this course has been developed by experienced artists and instructors in a ground up, collaborative environment. We are passionate about what we do and the experiences we share with our community!
