Teams collaborate to create an original piece of music through hands-on activities that promote team bonding and personal growth.

Workshop Selections

Activities Include:

  • Music Sharing Session

  • “Found Sound” Scavenger Hunt

Sound World: Team Jingle

Teams share personal experiences, aesthetic tastes, and creative instincts, finding inspiration together to create an original team jingle!

Process: Teams build their jingle and collaborate through a shared Ableton session run by their Artist Instructor.

Activities Include:

  • “Sampling” Sounds

  • Beat-Making

Sound Voyage: Team Collage

Team members generate sonic patterns intuitively, resulting in beats, melodies, and chord progressions. They then explore how to connect their musical pieces to form a single track!

Process: Team members participate in '“pattern” activities from their personal computer browsers, and collaborate on a shared Ableton session run by their Artist Instructor. Sanitized headphones with replaceable foam provided.

Activities Include:

  • Synth Instrument Creation

  • “Show and Tell” Guided Feedback

Sound Synergy: Team Song

Teams get curious about one another's unique creative instincts and uplift one another’s skillsets to create an original, fully produced song!

Process: Team members participate by uniting around a common vision, identifying one another’s strengths, delegating roles, and giving and receiving feedback. Guidance, musical performance of ideas generated, and recorded production of the song is provided by their Artist Instructors.

  • Sterling Steffen

    MFML Artist Instructor

    Sterling Steffen produces music as Guesthouse and composes for film and podcasts, including Your Hometown produced by Radiolab’s Robert Krulwitch.

  • Michael Romero

    MFML Artist Instructor

    Michael Romero is a social worker, therapist, and musician with a masters of Science in Social Work from UT Austin, where he is currently an Adjunct Professor.

  • Laura Jorgensen

    MFML Artist Instructor

    Laura Jorgensen is a vocalist, ethnomusicologist and educator sharing her passion for global cultures through leadership of music programs at local schools and universities including UT Austin and Huston Tillotson.

    We offer customized:

  • MFML Workshops feature the use of Ableton Live, a digital audio workstation (DAW) popular with DJs, composers, performers, and music enthusiasts.

    All gear and equipment is provided by MFML with the exception of the Sound Voyager workshop, which requires the use a personal or work computer by participants.

  • By using sound as the medium for collaboration, teams explore new ways to communicate, opening their mind to new possibilities and insights within their workflow.

    Teams will be provided with an mp3 file of the music created within 24 hours of their workshop’s completion.

  • Please contact us if you are interested in a virtual form of one of our Workshops. We are available and experienced in providing this upon request.

  • We are available to describe musical activity content as needed. Please contact us with questions or to set up a consultation.

    Lexicon:

    • Track: A recorded piece of music

    • Sampling: A recording of a pre-existing sound or piece of music re-purposed for an original composition

    • Beat-Making: The creation of a rhythm for a piece of music
